West Bengal

16 MNGOs are implementing RCH-II interventions through 76FNGOs in 71 blocks, 146 subcentres and 5 urban boroughs of the state. 

Phase-I MNGOs (CINI, WBVHA, GUP) have completed their 1-½ year of RCH-II implementation (starting from Oct 2005) and have received their 2nd installment. 

Phase-II MNGOs (SPAR, St Johns Ambulance) have completed 1 year (starting from June 2006) and in process of receiving 2nd installment.

Phase-III MNGOs (11 MNGOs) have started implementing (from Jan 2007) the RCH-II after project approval and receipt of their 1st installment.

Jharkhand

RRC is providing support to 3 MNGOs covering 5 districts, out of 22 districts of the State.

Andaman & Nicobar Island

RRC is also providing support to the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Island.

Trainings and Workshops

A four-day (21st Feb’07-24th Feb’07) Experience Sharing Workshop was organized by CINI-RRC for MNGOs & FNGOs of West Bengal. 16 MNGOs and 5 FNGOs of West Bengal shared their field level success as well as challenges in presence of Deputy Commissioner, NGO Div., GoI, State Family Welfare Officer (SFWO), Govt. of West Bengal, SNGOC and representatives of ARC. 

RRC Review Meeting was held at Kolkata from 7th - 9th March’07. All 11 RRCs from all over India and SNGOCs from 9 states participated in the review meeting. Deputy Commissioner, NGO Division, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and ARC team were also present in the meeting. A technical update on safe abortion was also provided during the meeting by International Project Assistance Service (IPAS).

A three-day Refresher Training on RCH service delivery components was organized by CINI-RRC from 2nd – 4th April, 2007 for MNGOs of West Bengal The objective was to enhance the skill and knowledge of MNGO functionaries on the service delivery Components of RCH.

Advocacy and networking

CINI-RRC organized an exposure visit for 4 MNGOs (CINI, WBVHA, GUP, St. John Ambulance) of West Bengal to NIAHRD, Cuttack, Orissa. The major objectives of the visit were to have better understanding on “Home Based Management of Young Infants” conducted by NIAHRD with support from ICMR in districts of Cuttack and Balasore in Orissa. 

The concept note on Best Practices Centre (BPC) was prepared and shared with ARC and NGO Div, GoI.

Strategy paper on capacity building of SNGOs in West Bengal has been prepared and shared with State NGO Coordinator (SNGOC), West Bengal.

Documentation

Published RRC Newsletter TARANGA covering the theme on “Convergence initiatives of Health and PRI in West Bengal”.

RRC Coordinator wrote articles on Janaswasthya O Panchayat (Public Health and Panchayat0 for publication in 2 volumes of Sishu Swasthya Katha (Some Words on Child Health) the Bengali Newsletter of CINI. The editions were circulated to all MNGOs of West Bengal.

Published RRC Brochure for information sharing with different stakeholders and beneficiaries

CINI-RRC is developing a comparative CD on RCH indicators of all 19 Districts of West Bengal and the BLS indicators of the 16 MNGOs. 

Capacity Building of RRC Team Members

RRC Coordinator and Training Coordinator made an exposure visit to the organization “SEARCH” at Gadchiroli, Maharashtra to observe Home Based Neonatal Care (HBNC) by mothers and trained village health workers at community level and to have a clear understanding about training module and strategies on Training of Village Health Workers (VHW) including Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA).

RRC Training Coordinator attended the course on “Gender and Reproductive Health” in Hyderabad in Jan’07.

Innovative Initiatives of CINI-RRC

CINI-RRC has organized Process Documentation Workshop for MNGOs, West Bengal from 19th Feb’07 to 20th Feb’07. This workshop was first such initiative for MNGOs in India. The process documentation workshop was organized with the objective to enable the participants to understand the importance of process documentation in development initiative with special focus on RCH and to enhance the skill of participants on different types of process documentation and the methodologies. 

Training Need Assessment (TNA) of MNGOs of West Bengal was conducted with the objective to develop future training plan of the MNGOs working for RCH II project in West Bengal. Need assessment was done to identify knowledge gaps in RCH & skill building required for designing and conducting training programmes. Based on the findings of TNA, future training plan for MNGOs have been prepared.

Qualitative reporting formats have been developed for MNGOs and FNGOs by CINI-RRC. The formats are being used for documenting the progress of activities under MNGO-FNGO programme in different districts. 

Involvement in NRHM Initiatives

CINI-RRC is designated as the State Nodal Agency (SNA) under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) for ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) rolling out in the state of West Bengal.

RRC Project Director is the Coordinator of SNA and the member of National Level ASHA Mentoring Team. 

RRC Coordinator is the State Level Master Trainer for ASHA and provided on-the-spot support to ASHA training in the district of West Bengal
In the first phase of ASHA training 80 blocks from 14 districts were selected for implementation, which is to be up scaled to 136 blocks in 2007-08
 In the first phase of ASHA training, CINI has conducted the training of 23 district level trainers (Coordinators) and 144 block level trainers (Co facilitators) from the MNGOs in 9 batches.
Total One Thousand Four Hundred and Twenty Four (1424) ASHA have been trained so far.
CINI has developed ASHA training kit and IEC materials (household census format, COHORT register and flip book) for the ASHA workers. 
CINI-RRC, as member of the State Core team for District Health Planning attended the State Level Orientation Workshop for preparation of District Health Plan at State Institute of Health & Family Welfare (SIHFW), West Bengal.
