Q: How do you select your beneficiaries? A: In CINI’s project area covering villages and slum areas, care is taken to include poor women and children. Identification is made easy with the help of community members and CINI staff who belong to the same area. Q:
What does CINI do?
A: CINI provides and facilitates nutrition, health, education and protection services to poor and marginalized children and women in villages and slum areas in West Bengal and Jharkhand states of India. Q: Where does CINI operate, where is it based and how many people do you cover?
A: CINI implements projects in the states of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. We cover over 2 million people in these states with headquarters in Kolkata, West Bengal with unit offices in other states..
Q: How do you ensure health of children in your programme?
A: Children receive age appropriate immunisations against tuberculosis, measles, polio, tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. Their parents are taught simple hygienic measures to prevent transmission of infections, low cost nutritious diets and getting their children treated for infections from the nearest health centre. They are visited at home by CINI trained health workers and their progress is monitored on parent retained health cards. Families are encouraged to drink safe water, use sanitary toilets and sleep in insecticide treated mosquito nets to prevent malaria and dengue.
Q: How do you ensure nutrition in children in a poverty situation?
A: Adequate nutrition during pregnancy is ensured by teaching mothers to eat well to deliver babies with birth weight above 2.5 kgs. After delivery, exclusive breast feeding is promoted to ensure that the child is supplied with antibodies to prevent childhood ailments. Low cost and home available foods with emphasis on home grown vegetables, protein sources from home raised poultry, fish from the local fish ponds are promoted instead of status foods purchased from the stores. The importance of frequent feeding and improving quality of foods is emphasised.
Q: How do you ensure that the child goes to school?
A: Parents and family members are trained to prepare children to enter school, by CINI trained workers using teaching and learning materials. The parents are guided to the nearest school to get their children enrolled and regular follow up is made both at school and at the family level to ensure that they remain in school.
Q: How do you ensure that the child does not end up as child labour or is not trafficked?
A: Parents are motivated to get the children enrolled in local schools. CINI trained workers follow up with parents at home and motivated to keep them in school. Keeping children in school is the best form of protection.

Q: Are contributions to CINI tax-deductible?
A: All donations to CINI are eligible for Income Tax exemption under section 35 AC and 80G of IT Act 1961. Q: How do I make a donation?
A: You may donate on line through our website, or by sending a cheque or draft in favor of “Child in Need Institute” and sent to CINI International Unit, 23/44 Gariahat Road, Kolkata – 700029, West Bengal, India. An official receipt will be sent to your address. A bank transfer is also possible and you may contact cini.international@cini-india.org for bank details.

A: We welcome visits to your sponsored child and will be happy to plan this if we receive your travel plan. Your stay can be arranged at the CINI guest house in our campus, located in the outskirts of

A: We prefer to receive donations instead against your preferred gift, which will be purchased locally and given to the child. A “thank you card” will be sent to you on behalf of the child. This is to avoid loss in transit by mail.. Q: How is the money spent in the sponsorship programme?

A: Yes! We will be very happy to “gift” a mother through our “Adopt a Mother” or “Educate a Child” sponsorship to your designated family member, friend or colleague at work and send reports regularly. This can be sent on a birthday, anniversary, Christmas, Diwali or Puja.. Q: Can I view progress reports of my mother and Child online?
A: Yes. We will send your unique password and the current updated report will be available on our website www.cini-india.org. Q: For how many years can I sponsor my child?
A: A sponsored child may be sponsored up to 14 years. For further details please contact us at

A: You will be always welcome, one month notice is preferable to visit a beneficiary.
Project visits may be organised with a shorter notice. First time visitors are welcome every Thursday morning (except for public holiddays) to CINI main
campus by 10.00 to visit the Thursday clinic and get an overview of activities.
Q: What is the source of CINI’s Funding and the total budget?
A: CINI receives its funding by raising donations from the community it serves (10%), from the state and central government of India against grants for projects (15%), CINI’s own fund raising efforts in India and internationally (10%) and from national and international donors (65%).

Q. How Credible and Trustworthy is CINI?
A. CINI has grown since its inception in 1974 from small beginnings to a National level organization covering over 5 million people in some of the poorest parts of India. The Government of India recognized CINI’s contribution through the National Award for Child Welfare twice in 1985 and 2005. CINI is accredited to The Credibility Alliance, who govern and monitor transparency and effectiveness of NGOs in India. Q: Can I contribute to CINI’s CORPUS fund?
A: We will very much appreciate donations to CINI Corpus Fund, as interest from the invested amount helps to defray expenses towards salaries of core staff, fund pilot projects to benefit children and women and fund raising initiatives. . Q. Can I contribute towards CINI’s disaster relief fund?
A. Yes. CINI has an experienced Disaster Management Team who provides immediate relief. Last year we responded to floods in Bihar and before that for tsunami. A: Volunteers who are willing to contribute to skill building for CINI colleagues in areas such as documentation, data analysis, action research, proposal development and website management are always welcome.
