PROGRAM RELATED
A: In CINI’s project area covering villages and slum areas, care is taken to include poor women and children. Identification is made easy with the help of community members and CINI staff who belong to the same area.
Q:
What does CINI do?
A: CINI provides and facilitates nutrition, health, education and protection services to poor and marginalized children and women in villages and slum areas in West Bengal and Jharkhand states of India.
Q: How do you ensure health of children in your programme?
A: Children receive age appropriate immunisations against tuberculosis, measles, polio, tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. Their parents are taught simple hygienic measures to prevent transmission of infections, low cost nutritious diets and getting their children treated for infections from the nearest health centre. They are visited at home by CINI trained health workers and their progress is monitored on parent retained health cards. Families are encouraged to drink safe water, use sanitary toilets and sleep in insecticide treated mosquito nets to prevent malaria and dengue.
Q: How do you ensure nutrition in children in a poverty situation?
A: Adequate nutrition during pregnancy is ensured by teaching mothers to eat well to deliver babies with birth weight above 2.5 kgs. After delivery, exclusive breast feeding is promoted to ensure that the child is supplied with antibodies to prevent childhood ailments. Low cost and home available foods with emphasis on home grown vegetables, protein sources from home raised poultry, fish from the local fish ponds are promoted instead of status foods purchased from the stores. The importance of frequent feeding and improving quality of foods is emphasised.
Q: How do you ensure that the child goes to school?
A: Parents and family members are trained to prepare children to enter school, by CINI trained workers using teaching and learning materials. The parents are guided to the nearest school to get their children enrolled and regular follow up is made both at school and at the family level to ensure that they remain in school.
