A census was undertaken through this project to understand the school going status in select areas of rural West Bengal, the findings, thereof, informing interventions promoting education. The study revealed that a little more than half the children under six years of age are enrolled in Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program of Government of West Bengal. Children mainly go to government or government aided schools. About a third of the children in the age group of 6-18 years are not in school. About 2% of the children had some form of disability. Less than half the children with any form of disability went to school. About one in five children was working, the proportions being higher for those not going to school. |

ICICI Bank has
initiated a new project to bridge gaps in the access to formal
schooling for a large number of children from disadvantaged
background. The Read to Lead initiative will reach out to
100,000 children through formal education at the elementary
level in whole country. CINI has taken up this initiative to
support 10000 children in 22 schools of two districts in
Jharkhand ie Gumla and Ranchi district to provide educational
support and improve their comprehensive learning outcomes.
Government schools catering to tribal, minorities and deprived
section children at Gumla District and Ranchi district both from
rural and urban slums will be targeted. Reading rooms
(libraries) will be established to cater early learners,
arrangement of separate toilet/wash room for girls, arrangements
for vocational trainings for girls, children will be provided
with computer education,
books, uniform, bags, educational games, science kits etc. as a
support. Teachers from local community will have their
capacities built to provide remedial support to check drop out
rate of children, a supportive supervision framework with the
help of the Government Cluster resource persons will be
developed. The project will work with the Village Education
Committee/ community to strengthen and sensitize
Parents/community towards education, the project would do time
to time counseling to encourage parents and also ensure local
community involvement.

CINI
North Bengal was given the responsibility of initiating
special schools in three areas namely Birpara, Myanaguri and
Garobasti of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal. The project
started from April 2008 and within 6 months, we have
enrolled more than 130 children who attend the schools
regularly. Most of the children are agriculture
labourers who now have an opportunity to catch up with their
childhood. Additionally we give vocational training in
tailoring and jute mat making to the children that will build
into sustenance in the near future. |

points in Siliguri specifically Tenzin Norgay bus stand, P.C.

strategically devised a term called Satellite Point Persons
comprising of local people, local police personnel, businessmen
who readily alert our Outreach Workers on the movement of these
children, which in turn aids to the rescue and restoration of
the child in need of care and protection. The project being
multipronged focused on education as well as health of children
and the community people.

education and protection of children living in Khalpara who
have never been to school/drop outs was initiated in the year
2005. An education center runs from 3 p.m to 9 p.m, which
through educational support provides protection to these
children while the mothers are actively involved with their
clients. Through this initiative 388
children mainstreamed into formal schools and 80% children
retained through evening coaching support by community based
teachers. Health camps and clinics are also held at the
community level. |

2007 and 2008 by CINI) and the vulnerability these children,
especially the girl child is exposed to, CINI North Bengal
unit resolved to start a Girls Shelter Home in Siliguri with
funding aid from CINI UK. The shelter home was inagurated on
February 8th, 2009. This home would cater to the needs of
girls at risk below 18 years of age, with the main objective
of reintegrating these children with their families or
rehabilitating them through linkage with other organisations,
so that the child is ensured of a better future.

The project adopts the institutional Life Cycle Approach to improve maternal, child and adolescent health outcomes. Through a combination of strategies like Case Management, Behaviour Change Communication, and Linkage and Partnerships with multiple stakeholders, intergenerational gains are realised. Cohorts of pregnant women are followed up through their pregnancies and till the child is two years of age to promote pregnancy and early childhood care. Knowledge levels of adolescents in the communities are enhanced with respect to health and nutrition enabling them to be prepared for parenthood.

The project aimed to inform the development of Young People’s Reproductive and Sexual Health programme by the generation of necessary evidence to support such an initiative. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were used in the study. Study findings show deeply entrenched gender norms restrictive of girls’ education and mobility and lack of correct knowledge of key reproductive and sexual health issues like pubertal changes and HIV/ AIDS. Sexual activity is reported among unmarried males and females, though in small percentages. Males are more likely to seek treatment for symptoms related to reproductive and sexual health morbidity than females.

It is a six-day tele-counselling service provided to young people between 10 and 24 years needing support on any adolescent issue like reproductive health, sex and sexuality, emotional problems and career guidance.
FACE-TO-FACE COUNSELLING
CINI ARC provides face to face counselling for emotional problems to young people (10 – 24 years) by appointment only
(call 24611463). This is a chargeable service. Rupees 200 is charged for new cases and Rupees 150 for follow up cases.
TELECOUNSELLING COURSE
CINI YUVA in collaboration with the Calcutta University has initiated a “Certificate Course in Telecounselling on Issues and Concerns of Young people”. The course is divided into two parts – theoretical and practical. Experts from CINI, West Bengal State AIDS Prevention & Control Society and reputed faculty members from the Department of Psychology, Calcutta University conduct the training. After the theory classes, the participants are placed in various help lines to have hands on experience. Candidates from Psychology and Sociology background have participated in the course and the course fee is Rs 4000. On successful completion of this one-month course, participants are awarded a certificate from University of Calcutta.

This is a recently concluded research project and marks a collaboration between CINI and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH), Baltimore, USA. The objective of the project was to reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia among adolescent girls in West Bengal, India through a community based, multi-pronged package of interventions to distribute and promote consumption of Iron Folic Acid (IFA) supplements and provide nutrition education to improve dietary iron intake among adolescent girls. Dual strategies of peer counseling and community participation were adopted. About 3500 unmarried and married non-pregnant adolescent girls, aged 12-19 years, resident in two Gram Panchayat areas (35,000 population approximately) in a block in rural West Bengal, India were reached out through the project. More than 200 Peer Educators and Youth Advocates (Yuvasathis) were selected and trained on a range of youth issues including nutrition and anaemia. Local committees had been set up in the community to oversee implementation. Such village level committees, with both young people and adult stakeholders, met regularly to monitor progress as well as suggest ways to improve intervention. Project evaluation results are awaited. |

This is one of the earliest research projects of the division. The study aimed to generate information about psycho social correlates of reproductive and sexual health of youth (15-24 years). It also sought to develop and test a counseling intervention strategy to address the issues among young married and unmarried youth in poor settings in rural and urban West Bengal. Study findings include the following: psychosomatic complaints are more likely among females (especially married ones) than among males; Females are also more likely to exhibit anxiety and depression; Reproductive complaints are higher among those with anxiety and depression and is especially pronounced among married females. Training manual and handbook for health workers on psychosocial health issues, comic books, flip chart, etc have been developed through the project to promote greater awareness on the issue among young people and service providers.

demarcation and renovation, project preparatory activities,

Rehabilitation Center. Care givers are oriented on its
preparation and other aspects related to child nutrition. Every
500gm of nutrimix has 70 gm of protein and yields 1700
Kilocalories of energy. During the year 646 packets of Nutrimix
were distributed.

CINI NB’s
urban health programme began in the year 2003 under our “Adopt
A Mother and Save Her Child” programmme, which is a unique
intervention developed by CINI covering villages and slums in
West Bengal. In this programme the health worker first
identifies a needy mother-to-be within the first twelve weeks of
her pregnancy, CINI then looks for sponsors to adopt them. Once
the sponsors are identified the mothers are registered for
health services during pregnancy and till the child reaches the
age of two.
Ward Nos. 18, 20 and 28 of Siliguri
Municipality Corporation were selected for this programme based
on a slum assessment study and dialogues with the Siliguri
Municipal Corporation. The 5 year programme has been able to
cater to more than 50 needy mothers.
